Bill Reed Memorial Doubles
The Crowborough Pétanque Club held the first Bill Reed Memorial Doubles on the 26th April on the last sunny day in April. Bill had done so much for the club during his tenure of the secretaryship that it was decided to remember him in this way. The competition was run on thee Swiss Formula and five games were played by all. Three games were played before lunch was taken at one-o-clock. In the mornings play four teams won all their games though several had been close hard fought matches of 13-12. The afternoons’ play started under a almost cloudless blue sky and lovely warm sunshine. Two more games were played with more close games. The day finished with one team winning all their five games four winning four and only one team did not win a game. Town Trophy
Crowborough Pétanque Club held their annual Town trophy Competition on the 26th July. Fourteen teams entered the event from Adur, Bricklayers, Croydon, Handcross and Hartley. The morning’s play was divided into two leagues of five and one of four with the top two teams and the two best of the rest going into the main. The clouds soon dispersed to give us some sunny intervals during the day, in the afternoon we had a cool breeze. In the leagues only Handcross and the Quakers did not lose a game and only two teams went without a win. Lunch was taken at one thirty in the sunshine. Play resumed at two thirty and Handcross (Nigel Sibbring & Tony Watson) and the Quakers (Geoff & Maureen Fuller, Hartley) soon got into their stride winning their games to meet in the final. In the final Handcross soon took control with some excellent pointing and good shooting and lead all the way to a 13-5 well deserved victory. It was very nice to see Tony playing again at Crowborough after his recent illness we hope he soon fully recovers. The plate final was an all Croydon affair with No One Likes Us (Keith Baker & David Poole) playing Croydon Bell (Sue and Steve Fort) No One Likes Us soon took the lead with Keith’s very relaxed way of playing making pointing and shooting look deceptively easy, going on to win13-8. The competition was in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and so far £210.00 has been raised. Thanks to all for the generous support for the raffle and tea money.
