Bill Reed Memorial Doubles

The Crowborough Pétanque Club held the first Bill Reed Memorial Doubles on the 26th April on the last sunny day in April. Bill had done so much for the club during his tenure of the secretaryship that it was decided to remember him in this way.  Fourteen teams entered in the competition and it was fitting that over half of them play in The Crowborough and District League as Bill was instrumental in founding it. The competition was run on thee Swiss Formula and five games were played by all. Three games were played before lunch was taken at one-o-clock.  In the mornings play four teams won all their games though several had been close hard fought matches of 13-12.   The afternoons’ play started under a almost cloudless blue sky and lovely warm sunshine.  Two more games were played with more close games. The day finished with one team winning all their five games four winning four and only one team did not win a game. The cup (which had been donated to the club) along with the winner’s trophies was presented  to the Welcome Stranger (Jeff Mitchell & Alan Smith, Welcome Stranger, Crowborough) with five wins and a +35, Runners Up with four wins and a +21 were the Crows (Dorothy Bickford & Martin Gordon, Crowborough Pétanque Club)  bottles of wine were presented to Beegees (Betty Dawes & Gladys Tester, Crowborough Pétanque Club) Four wins and a +17 and Frogeyes  (Pam & Neville Plummer, Harriers) Four  wins anda +16. A very friendly and good day of pétanque was enjoyed by all who took part just as Bill would have liked.

Over Fifties Doubles

On 24th May the hottest day of 2009 so far Crowborough Pétanque Club held their eleventh Over Fifties Doubles..  Unfortunately with a charity competition being held on the same day at Lancing there were only nine teams entered.  Teams from Handcross, Welcome Stranger Hartley, Redstart and for the first time a team from Borstal took part.  Play got under way promptly at ten-o-clock. The mornings play was in a league of four and one of five with the top two teams and the next best going into the main and four into the plate.  There was some very good pointing during the morning and the Beegees (Betty Dawes & Gladys Tester Crowborough) lead the field in the morning with three wins and+23 points, only one team did not win a game.  Lunch was taken at one-o-clock in lovely sunshine and the afternoon’s play started at two in the Main Beegees continued with their winning ways 13-9, 13-10 to reach the final. The Cannons (Dorothy Bickford & Michael Little, Crowborough) also reached the final with a clean sheet having won all their games in the league.  The Cannons soon took the lead and looked to be heading for victory but Beegees fought back with some excellent pointing to level 11-11 then took the next end to win13-11.  The Plate final was between Mixed Fortunes (Tilde Waldron & Molly Brooker Crowborough) and Welcome Stranger (Herbie Edwards & Gordon Manville Welcome Stranger) Mixed Fortunes were soon well in the lead with some of the best pointing of the day and reached 10-2 but got stuck on 12. Welcome Stranger were relieved to get a point and slowly with an improvement in their shooting whittled the lead down a point at a time to win13-12. Everybody enjoyed the day although it was very hot on the terrain in the sun and people were glad of the shade between playing

Town Trophy

Crowborough Pétanque Club held their annual Town trophy Competition on the 26th July. Fourteen teams entered the event from Adur, Bricklayers, Croydon, Handcross and Hartley. The morning’s play was divided into two leagues of five and one of four with the top two teams and the two best of the rest going into the main. The clouds soon dispersed to give us some sunny intervals during the day, in the afternoon we had a cool breeze.  In the leagues only Handcross and the Quakers did not lose a game and only two teams went without a win. Lunch was taken at one thirty in the sunshine.  Play resumed at two thirty and Handcross (Nigel Sibbring & Tony Watson) and the Quakers (Geoff & Maureen Fuller, Hartley) soon got into their stride winning their games to meet in the final.   In the final Handcross soon took control with some excellent pointing and good shooting and lead  all the way to a 13-5 well deserved victory. It was very nice to see Tony playing again at Crowborough after his recent illness we hope he soon fully recovers.  The plate final was an all Croydon affair with No One Likes Us (Keith Baker & David Poole) playing Croydon Bell (Sue and Steve Fort) No One Likes Us soon took the lead with Keith’s very relaxed way of playing making pointing and shooting look deceptively easy, going on to win13-8.  The competition was in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and so far £210.00 has been raised. Thanks to all for the generous support for the raffle and tea money.

Clarion Doubles

On one of the warmest sunniest days of the year so far the Clarion Doubles was held by Crowborough Pétanque Club. Luton, Harrow Croydon, Adur, Handcross, Brighton, Tovil, Oxshott, Hartley and Harriers were represented along with teams from Crowborough.  With twenty three teams taking part, the morning’s play was divided into five leagues of four and one of three, with the top two teams in each league going into the main. There were several very close games of 13-12 and 13-11 during the mornings play, four teams won all their games and four lost all theirs, there was one fanny.  Lunch was taken at one with the leagues games finished or nearly over. The afternoon’s play got under way before two-o-clock with twelve teams competing in the main and eleven in the plate.  Surprisingly Kingston (Ben Brousson & David Bourdeau) whom had easily won all their games in the morning, were knocked out in the first round of the main by an Oxshott team who had only won one in the morning.  Then it became clear that Chiltern (Adrian Emson & Myra Huntley) and Frogeyes (Pam & Neville Plummer, Harriers) would be the ones to watch. Both teams easily made their way into the final with 13-6, 13-7 13-5 and 13-5, 13-4 1213-7 victories. The final was a great game to watch with some fine pointing and shooting and three dead ends.  Adrian just had the edge on the shooting clearing Pam’s excellent points on the jack two or three times in an end.  With the game at nine all Adrian with his last boulé shot Frogeyes nearest boulé out to give Chiltern an 11-9 lead. Frogeyes came back in the next end to bring the score to 12-10 but the next end Chiltern took the point and the match, a very good and deserved victory. The plate had long been decided the junior team Young Ones (Callum McCrea & Adam Barclay Crow bough Social Club and Wheatsheaf) doing very well to get into the semi-final. With 13-7 & 13-2 victories. However it was to be London Pride (Nick Goodheart & Simon Adamsdale Harrow) and Oxshott Wolves (Frank Charlesworth & Chris Peat) who made it to the final. Oxshott convincingly took command with fine pointing and shooting never gave their opponents any leeway and took the plate 13-2. I think everybody enjoyed a good day of pétanque in nice surroundings good company and beautiful weather.   .
