Sports Shield Doubles

The new season started at Crowborough on 13th March with the Sports Shield Doubles. After rain during the night the terrainwas wet but the showers kept away.  Teams from Adur, Croydon, Handcross, Hartley, Harriers, Lordswood and The Villagers joined teams from our own club to make fourteen teams in the competition.  Play started prompt at ten-o-clock with two leagues of four and two teams of three.  During the mornings play only one team won all their games there were no fannies and two teams did not win a game. Lunch was taken at twelve thirty with a scheduled hours break. Eight teams went into the Main in the afternoon with the remaining six teams playing in the Plate. In the Main it soon became clear two teams were dominate Handcross2 (Derek Offer & Tony Kidd, Handcross) who had not lost a game and Grousers (David & Audrey Halsey, Famous Grousers) who had just scraped into the Main with a one point difference in the league. These two teams met in the final having easily beaten their respective opponents in the quarter and semis.  The final was interesting with both teams giving little away and the game could have gone either way with a final score of 13-12 Grousers were the winners.  The Plate was also a joy to watch with Handcross Juniors (Peter & Liam Kidd, Handcross) who had not won a game in the mornings play demolishing their opposing teams 31-2,13-4 and 13 -3 to win the Plate

Sociaboules

We held the Sosiaboules atCrowborough on the tenth of April on a lovely sunny day. There were twenty six players from Adur,  We had twenty six entrants from Adur, Crowborough and Cuckmere.  Worthing had phoned three times to say six or eight would becoming and the start was delayed in case they arrived.   This year Adur had the biggest number a big improvement on only four last year. We played three games before lunch and two more in the afternoon.  Each game was played with a different partner against a different team.  Three players won all their games in the morning, two lost their games and two were fannied.  Lunch was taken at twelve thirty and raffle tickets were sold during the break, the raffle pays for the prizes to be won in the games.  Play started again at two-o-clock with five players winning all their games in the in the afternoon and five losing all theirs. Bottles of wine were given to the players whom had the best score with one win, two wins, three wins, four wins and five wins. Betty was the overall winner with five wins and the players all sang Happy Birthday to her when she collected her prize.

Community Plus Group

On Friday 27th May we entertained nine members of the Community Plus Group to a few games of pétanque. There were several ladies who had not played before but they soon learned and played well for beginners. This was the last time Richard would be with the Group as he is taking up a new position at the end of the month away from the school.  The Group stopped play at three-o-clock to make a presentation to him as he had to leave then. We then carried on playing until four-o-clock when we had tea and cakes.  This will probably be the Group’s only visit to us this year. It is a pity they meet on Friday as otherwise we may have got some of them as members.

Seaford Visit

On the 5th August we had a visit from members of the Seaford Club.  This club was formed from the Seaford members of the old Cuckmere Club who found it too far to travel to Hankham when they were thrown out of the Alfriston Wine Centre.  Most of the club had visited Crowborough in the past when we had friendlies with Cuckmere. The visit had been postponed from 17th June when we had heavy rain. It was disappointing to have only eight members of our own club attend this friendly, when it was first suggested in August 2010 most members said they would like to have this event added to our calendar and confirmed this at the last  AGM.  However those members that did turn up thoroughly enjoyed the day and made new friends. It has been suggested that we should have this as a regular addition to our calendar with a return visit to Seaford. I think we can only do this if we can get at least twelve to fifteen of our club to commit themselves to join in.

KARF Visit

On a very warm sunny day KARF club came for their annual competition on the 1st September. Twelve of their members had arranged to come and play but unfortunately two lost their way and never arrived.  The Swiss formula was used to give them five games each and during the bye the odd team played with two of our members instead of standing out.  By lunch time no team had won all their games equally no team had lost any.  After lunch play resumed at two fifteen with Nick and Derek leading the way winning all their games in the afternoon’s play.  They were declared the winners having only losing their first game then winning the rest.  The group were served with tea before the cup was presented to the winners. Nick on behalf of their club expressed thanks to all who had made the day so enjoyable for them and hoped to come next year

Compaid Doubles

The Crowborough Pétanque club held their annual Compaid Doubles competition on the warmest October day for many years. This was in stark contrast to last year’s competition when we had torrential downpours and the competition had to be abandoned.  Fifteen teams from Adur, Croydon, Handcross, Harriers, Lordswood, Tovil and Crowborough entered the contest.  Play started prompt at ten-o-clock with the morning’s play divided into three leagues of five.  Several newcomers who had only recently started playing the game had their first experiences of competitive pétanque; although none of them won a game they enjoyed the experience. There were only two teams who won all their games in the morning, two who lost all theirs and just one team was fannied.  Lunch was taken at one-o-clock in the warm sunshine with play starting again at two fifteen.  The winners and runners up from the leagues were joined by the next two best of the rest in the Main in the afternoon leaving seven teams to play in the Plate.  In the Main there were some very close games but Should Not Have Come (Andy Williams & Tracey Holt Lordswood) retired after the quarter finals to leave the Splashers a bye into the final. This was a long drawn out affair with each team taking too long between each throw thus the competition dragged on until late in the evening.  The Slashers, (Neil & Colin Phillips, Tovil) had their revenge for the humiliating 13-2 defeat in the morning by Star Masters (Scott Ashby & Mic Baxter, Tovil)  to beat them 31-12 to win the competition.  The Plate resulted in an easy win by AC/DC Alan & Dawn Constable, Social Club) 13-2 over Croydon (Andrew Randal & Sebastian Siznn).  The Competition raised £200.00 for the Compaid Trust bringing the total donation to the Compaid Trust over the years to more than £6000.00 and the total to all charities to £24000.00, which for a small club is quite good.
